Smallmouth Bass

While Muskegon Heights might be better known for its largemouth bass, dedicated anglers can find some scrappy smallmouth bass in the area too. The Muskegon River, with its rocky stretches and current breaks, is the primary habitat. Look for smallmouth around bridge pilings, rocky points, and deeper holes. Focus your efforts on areas with moderate current. Summer and early fall are generally the best times to target smallmouth, as the water temperatures are warmer. Wading is an option in some areas, but a boat or kayak provides greater access. A local tip: try using crayfish imitations or tube baits near the bottom, especially in areas with clear water. The smallmouth population in the Muskegon River is healthy, and you can expect to find fish in the 1-3 pound range, with occasional larger specimens.
