Smallmouth Bass

Sand Lake and the connected waterways in the area offer some good smallmouth bass fishing. While not as abundant as largemouth, the smallies here can be scrappy fighters, especially in the clearer waters. The best time to target them is during the warmer months, from late spring through early fall. Look for smallmouth near rocky points, drop-offs, and submerged wood. These fish love structure! A great local tactic is to use crayfish-imitation lures, as these are a primary food source for smallmouth in this region. Tubes, jigs, and crankbaits in crayfish patterns can be very effective. Another good option is topwater lures early in the morning or late in the evening. Be aware that the water clarity can vary depending on the weather, so adjust your lure colors accordingly. Access to the lake is available via public boat launches, but be prepared for some boat traffic, especially on weekends. Remember to check the Michigan DNR fishing regulations for size and bag limits before heading out.
