Smallmouth Bass

Looking to tangle with some bronzebacks? Spring Lake, Michigan, offers a fantastic smallmouth bass fishery, particularly in the Grand River and the lake itself. What makes this area special is the diverse structure, from rocky shorelines and submerged timber to deeper channels, all holding smallies. Spring and early summer, before the recreational boating season kicks into high gear, is prime time, as the fish are actively spawning and feeding in the shallows. Fall is also excellent as they fatten up for winter. For boat access, the public launch near Mill Point Park is a good option, but be aware it can get crowded on weekends. A local tip: Pay close attention to water clarity. If the lake is murky, try fishing the clearer waters of the Grand River. Also, smallmouth in Spring Lake seem to have a fondness for crayfish imitations, so be sure to have a variety on hand.
