Smallmouth Bass

While Avon, Minnesota, is more renowned for its largemouth bass fishing, dedicated anglers can find pockets of smallmouth bass in specific locations. Focus your efforts on the clearer, rockier lakes and rivers in the surrounding area. Look for areas with current, such as inlets and outlets, as well as rocky points and drop-offs. The best time to target smallmouth bass is during the late spring and early fall when water temperatures are moderate. Small crankbaits, tubes, and jerkbaits are all effective lures. Fly fishing with streamers can also be productive. Local tip: target areas with crayfish, a favorite food source for smallmouth bass. A crayfish-imitating lure or fly can be deadly. Also, be prepared to cover a lot of water, as smallmouth bass can be more nomadic than largemouth. While smallmouth bass in this area may not reach trophy sizes, their feisty nature and acrobatic fights make them a rewarding target. Expect to catch smallmouth in the 1-2 pound range, with the occasional larger fish possible.
