Smallmouth Bass

While not as abundant as largemouth, smallmouth bass can be found in some of the clearer lakes and rivers near Burtrum, Minnesota. The Sauk River, which flows through the region, can hold some decent smallmouth, particularly in areas with faster current and rocky bottoms. Summer and early fall are generally the best times to target smallmouth, as they become more active in warmer water. Crayfish imitations, tubes, and crankbaits that mimic small baitfish are all effective lure choices. For river fishing, consider using a Carolina rig or a drop-shot rig to keep your bait near the bottom. A local tip: check the water levels of the Sauk River before you go; low water can make navigation difficult and concentrate the fish in deeper pools. Also, be prepared for some hiking, as access to some of the best smallmouth spots requires a bit of effort.
