Smallmouth Bass

While Floodwood, Minnesota, isn't necessarily known as a smallmouth bass mecca, there are definitely opportunities to target them in the area, especially if you're willing to explore. The St. Louis River, which flows nearby, holds a population of smallmouth bass, and it is probably your best bet in the area. Look for rocky areas, current breaks, and deeper pools. Summer and early fall are typically the most productive times. Crawfish imitations, tubes, and crankbaits are all effective lures. Be prepared for some current, as the river can be flowing pretty good at times, especially after a rain. A local tip: focus on areas near bridge pilings and other structures in the river. Also, be aware that access to the river can be limited in some areas, so do your research beforehand. The smallmouth bass in the St. Louis River tend to be scrappy fighters, so be ready for a good battle.
