Smallmouth Bass

If you're chasing smallmouth bass in central Minnesota, the Genola area offers some under-the-radar opportunities. While not as famous as some northern destinations, the local rivers and connected lakes hold surprisingly good populations of bronzebacks. The best fishing usually occurs in the spring and fall. As the water warms in spring, smallmouth move into shallower areas to spawn, becoming aggressive and readily taking lures. Fall sees them feeding heavily to prepare for winter. Focus on areas with rocky structure, submerged logs, and current breaks. A practical tip: The Platte River, accessible via several public access points near Genola, is a great starting point. Wading can be productive, but be mindful of water levels, especially after heavy rains. The smallmouth here tend to be opportunistic feeders, so a variety of lures, from crankbaits to tubes, can be effective. Don't overlook topwater presentations early and late in the day.
