Smallmouth Bass

While Golden Valley's lakes are better known for largemouth, some also hold decent populations of smallmouth bass, offering a fun challenge for anglers. Look for rocky points, submerged structure, and current areas if present, as smallmouth prefer these habitats. The best time to target smallmouth here is typically in the spring and fall, when water temperatures are moderate. During the summer months, they may move to deeper water to escape the heat. A key to success is using lures that mimic the smallmouth's natural prey, such as crayfish and minnows. Tubes, crankbaits, and jerkbaits can all be effective. Check local lake maps for structure and depth contours. Many of the smaller lakes offer shore fishing opportunities, but a small boat or kayak will allow you to access more of the lake and improve your chances of finding fish. Remember to practice catch and release to help maintain the smallmouth population.
