Smallmouth Bass

Smallmouth bass fishing in the Lakeville area presents a fun challenge for anglers. While not as abundant as largemouth, smallies can be found in the deeper, clearer lakes and rivers. The Vermillion River, with its rocky structure and current, is a solid option for wading anglers. Target areas around bridge pilings, rocky outcroppings, and deeper pools. Lake Marion, with its clearer water and rocky shorelines, can also hold smallmouth, especially near points and drop-offs. Spring and fall are generally the best times to fish for smallmouth, as they are more active in cooler water. Try using crankbaits, spinnerbaits, or tubes in crayfish patterns. A local tip: many anglers overlook the smaller creeks that feed into the larger lakes. These can hold surprisingly good numbers of smallmouth, especially during periods of low water. Also, be prepared to downsize your presentation if the fish are pressured. Lakeville's smallmouth aren't known for their size, but the fight they put up is impressive.
