Smallmouth bass fishing near Landfall, Minnesota, presents a unique opportunity to target these hard-fighting fish in a metro setting. While not as abundant as largemouth, smallmouth can be found in several of the area's lakes and rivers, particularly those with rocky bottoms and clear water. Focus your efforts on the St. Croix River, where rocky shorelines and submerged structure provide ideal habitat. Spring and fall are prime times, as smallmouth move into shallower water to spawn or feed before winter. Crankbaits, tubes, and jerkbaits are all effective lures. Look for rocky points, submerged boulders, and current breaks. A local tip: many of the access points to the St. Croix River require a small fee, so be sure to check beforehand.
