Smallmouth Bass

Milan, Minnesota, while perhaps not the first place that springs to mind for smallmouth bass, offers some surprisingly good fishing opportunities in the surrounding rivers and smaller lakes. The Pomme de Terre River, in particular, can hold some feisty smallies, especially around rocky areas and submerged timber. Target these areas with crankbaits or tubes. Spring and fall are prime times, as the bass are more active in cooler water temperatures. Summer can be productive too, but focus on early mornings or late evenings. A great access point is the public landing on the south end of Marsh Lake, from which you can navigate upstream into the Pomme de Terre. Be aware that water levels can fluctuate, so check conditions before heading out. The smallmouth here aren't giants, but they're scrappy and plentiful, offering an enjoyable day on the water.
