Smallmouth Bass

Smallmouth Bass fishing near Nashwauk, Minnesota can be surprisingly rewarding. While not as famous as some of the larger bass fisheries in the southern part of the state, the rocky shorelines and clear waters of the Iron Range offer ideal habitat. Look for smallmouth in the many lakes surrounding Nashwauk; these fish thrive in the area's cool, oxygen-rich waters. The best time to target them is from late spring through early fall, after the spawn. A key to success here is understanding the water clarity. Use natural-colored lures like green pumpkin or brown tubes in clear water, and switch to brighter colors like chartreuse or white in stained water. Many lakes have boat launches, but some of the smaller, more secluded lakes require carrying in a canoe or kayak. These less accessible spots often hold larger, less pressured smallmouth.
