Smallmouth Bass

Smallmouth bass in the Taconite area are a hidden gem, often overlooked in favor of their largemouth cousins. While not as abundant as largemouth, the smallmouth here can reach impressive sizes, particularly in the deeper, clearer lakes and rivers within the Iron Range region. Look for them around rocky points, submerged timber, and areas with current. The best time to target smallmouth is typically in the spring and fall, when water temperatures are cooler. Tube jigs, crankbaits, and spinnerbaits are all effective lures. Access to these waters varies, with some lakes having public boat launches and others requiring more adventurous access via forest roads. A key local tip: focus on areas with crayfish populations, as they are a major food source for smallmouth. Also, be prepared for clear water conditions, which may necessitate using lighter line and longer casts. Don't be afraid to explore some of the smaller, less-traveled lakes – you might be surprised at the quality of smallmouth fishing they offer.
