Smallmouth Bass

While Verndale is better known for its largemouth bass fishing, you can still find some smallmouth bass action in certain areas. Focus your efforts on rivers like the Long Prairie River, which offers rocky structure and faster-moving water that smallmouth prefer. The best time to target smallmouth here is generally from late spring through early fall, when the water temperatures are warmer. Look for areas with current breaks, such as behind rocks or logs, where smallmouth can ambush prey. Crayfish imitations, tube baits, and small crankbaits are all effective lures. A local tip is to fish during periods of low light, such as early morning or late evening, as this is when smallmouth are most active. Be prepared to wade or use a small boat or kayak to access the best fishing spots. The smallmouth in the Long Prairie River may not be huge, but they are known for their aggressive strikes and hard-fighting nature.
