The best times to target smallmouth are typically spring and fall when water temperatures are moderate. Summer can be productive during early mornings and late evenings. A local tip: try fishing the areas around the mouths of smaller creeks and streams that flow into the Missouri River; these areas often hold smallmouth. Use crayfish imitations, tube jigs, and small crankbaits to entice strikes. Be prepared for a good fight, as Missouri River smallmouth are known for their strength and agility.
