Northern Pike

If you're after northern pike near Lexington, Missouri, the backwater sloughs and oxbow lakes connected to the Missouri River offer the best opportunities. These ambush predators thrive in weedy areas with plenty of cover. Look for pike around submerged vegetation, fallen trees, and shallow bays. Spring is an excellent time to target pike as they move into the shallows to spawn. Fall is also productive as they feed aggressively before winter. A local tip: use large spinnerbaits, spoons, or crankbaits to trigger strikes. Pike are aggressive feeders, so don't be afraid to use flashy lures. Consider using a wire leader to prevent bite-offs, as pike have sharp teeth. Remember to handle pike carefully to avoid injury to yourself and the fish. The Lexington Conservation Area provides access to some of these backwater areas, but be prepared for potentially muddy conditions.
