While not as renowned as some other Missouri destinations, Wardsville offers some surprisingly good smallmouth bass fishing within a short drive. Focus your efforts on the rocky stretches of the Moreau River, which flows nearby. Smallmouth thrive in the cooler, clear waters and can be targeted with a variety of techniques. Topwater lures like poppers and walking baits can be effective in the early morning and late evening, while crankbaits and jigs work well in deeper water. Summer and early fall are generally the best times to target smallmouth, as the water levels stabilize and the fish become more active. Access to the Moreau River can be found at several bridge crossings and public access points. Be aware of fluctuating water levels, especially after heavy rains, as this can impact water clarity and fishing conditions. Consider using a kayak or canoe to access less pressured areas.
