If you're looking for some slab crappie action in central Missouri, Wardsville offers some fantastic opportunities. The numerous tributaries and backwaters of the nearby Missouri River, along with smaller lakes and ponds in the surrounding area, hold impressive populations of crappie. Spring is prime time, as the crappie move shallow to spawn. Look for them around submerged timber, brush piles, and docks in water depths of 4-8 feet. A simple jig tipped with a minnow under a bobber is a classic and effective presentation. Fall is another excellent time, as crappie school up again before winter. A local tip: Check water clarity before heading out; stained water can concentrate the fish and make them easier to target.
