While South Toms River isn't necessarily known as a smallmouth bass hotspot, determined anglers can still find them in certain areas. The key is focusing on the faster-moving sections of the Toms River and its tributaries, where there's more current and rocky structure. Smallmouth prefer these cooler, oxygenated waters. Spring and early summer, after the spawn, can be productive times to target them. Small crankbaits, tubes, and jerkbaits are all effective lures. Look for areas with rocky bottoms, submerged logs, and current breaks. Access can be a bit challenging, as much of the riverfront is privately owned. However, there are some public access points and bridge crossings that provide opportunities for bank fishing. Keep in mind that the smallmouth population here isn't as robust as the largemouth, so practice catch and release to help preserve the fishery. Be prepared to cover some ground and experiment with different presentations to find where the smallmouth are holding.
