Smallmouth Bass
Central New York, and Marcellus in particular, offers some fantastic smallmouth bass fishing opportunities. The Finger Lakes region is renowned for its deep, clear waters, and nearby Skaneateles Lake holds a healthy population of these hard-fighting fish. Focus your efforts around rocky points, drop-offs, and submerged structures. Smallmouth here tend to be aggressive, so don't be afraid to use reaction baits like crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and jerkbaits. The pre-spawn period in late spring (May-June) and the fall months (September-October) are prime times, as the fish are actively feeding. A local tip: access to Skaneateles Lake is available through several public boat launches, but parking can be limited, especially on weekends. Also, be aware of the lake's depth and wind conditions, as it can get choppy quickly. Look for Smallmouth near the many docks around the lake as well!
