Smallmouth Bass

Targeting smallmouth bass around Port Clinton offers a unique blend of Lake Erie structure and riverine environments. While Lake Erie itself provides excellent smallmouth habitat around rocky reefs and islands, don't overlook the Sandusky River. Springtime finds smallmouth staging near spawning areas. As summer progresses, they move to deeper structure. Fall brings them back to shallower water to fatten up before winter. Focus on rocky shorelines, submerged structure, and current breaks. Tube baits, crankbaits, and drop-shot rigs are all effective. A local's secret is to fish the areas around the Bass Islands (South Bass, Middle Bass, and North Bass Islands); these islands provide excellent smallmouth habitat and protection from the wind. Be aware of zebra mussels, which have increased water clarity, making smallmouth more wary in clear conditions. Polarized sunglasses are a must for spotting submerged structure.
