Smallmouth Bass

While Cornelius, Oregon, isn't exactly known as a smallmouth bass hotspot, Hagg Lake does hold a population of smallies that can provide some fun fishing. They aren't as abundant as largemouth, but targeting rocky points and submerged structure with crawfish-imitating lures can be effective. Spring and fall are your best bets, similar to largemouth fishing. Access to Hagg Lake is readily available via several boat ramps. A useful tip is to focus your efforts near the dam and along the steeper banks on the south side of the lake, as these areas tend to hold more rocky habitat preferred by smallmouth. You might also try drop-shotting finesse worms or using small crankbaits along the bottom. Don't expect huge numbers, but the satisfaction of landing a smallmouth in this largely largemouth-dominated lake is worth the effort.
