Smallmouth Bass

If you're chasing smallmouth bass in Eastern Oregon, Hermiston is a solid base of operations. The Columbia River is the main draw here, offering miles of fishable water. Look for rocky points, submerged structure, and current breaks, as these are smallie magnets. Spring (May-June) and Fall (September-October) are prime times, as the water temperatures are ideal and the fish are actively feeding before and after the summer heat. A good access point is the Hat Rock State Park boat ramp, which provides easy access to the Columbia. Be aware of strong currents, especially near the confluence of the Umatilla River. Local smallmouth tend to be aggressive, so don't be afraid to throw reaction baits like crankbaits and spinnerbaits. Also, the smallmouth here can be surprisingly deep. Try drop-shotting or Carolina-rigging soft plastics in deeper holes and along ledges. Keep an eye on the water levels, as they can fluctuate due to dam operations.
