Smallmouth Bass

The Metolius River isn't typically known for smallmouth bass, but a population exists and offers a unique angling experience in this pristine, spring-fed river. The clear, cold water challenges anglers, as the smallmouth here are wary and selective. Focus your efforts in the warmer months, from late spring through summer, when the water temperatures are more conducive to bass activity. Look for smallmouth in the lower stretches of the river, where it widens and slows, offering deeper pools and rocky cover. A stealthy approach is crucial; use light line and natural-looking presentations like crayfish imitations or small crankbaits. Public access is limited, so research access points beforehand.
