Smallmouth Bass

Smallmouth bass fishing near Philomath, Oregon, means heading to the Willamette River. The rocky sections and deeper pools of the Willamette provide ideal habitat for smallmouth. Summer and early fall are the peak seasons, as the water warms up and the bass become more active. Look for them around rocky outcroppings, submerged logs, and current breaks. A great local tip is to use crawdad imitations, either crankbaits or soft plastics, bounced along the bottom. Also, don't overlook the confluence of smaller streams with the Willamette; these areas often concentrate baitfish and, consequently, smallmouth. The river is accessible by boat from several public ramps, but be mindful of the current, especially during periods of heavy rainfall. Wading is also possible in some areas, but be cautious of slippery rocks.
