Smallmouth Bass

Smallmouth bass fishing around Phoenix, Oregon, requires a bit of exploration, but can be rewarding. The Rogue River, a short drive away, is your best bet. Focus on the rocky stretches and riffles, as smallmouth love the current and structure. Summer and early fall are ideal, when the water levels have dropped and the river is more easily waded. Try using crawfish-imitating crankbaits or tubes hopped along the bottom. Fly fishing with streamers can also be effective. Access points are available along Highway 62. Be aware of changing water levels, especially after rainfall, and always wear appropriate wading gear. The smallmouth in the Rogue aren't giants, but they are known for their aggressive strikes and energetic fights. These fish are wild and wily, so be sure to use stealth and make accurate casts.
