Smallmouth Bass

The Willamette and Columbia Rivers around Portland offer surprisingly good smallmouth bass fishing. Forget the image of clear, rocky streams; here, you'll find smallies thriving in urban rivers with varying water clarity and structure. The best time to target them is late spring through early fall when the water warms up. Focus on rocky areas, current breaks, and submerged timber. These fish are opportunistic feeders, so a variety of lures can be effective. Crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and jigs are all good choices. A local's secret: try fishing near the confluence of smaller tributaries entering the main rivers, as these areas often hold concentrations of baitfish and, consequently, smallmouth. Be aware of strong currents and changing river levels, especially after rainfall. Bank access is available at several parks, but a boat or kayak will significantly expand your fishing options.
