Smallmouth Bass

Roseburg offers some surprisingly good smallmouth bass fishing. The Umpqua River system, especially the South Umpqua, is the key. Its rocky runs and riffles provide ideal habitat. Look for smallies around submerged logs, boulders, and current breaks. Early spring and fall are prime times, as the water temperatures are moderate and the fish are actively feeding before and after the summer heat. Summer can also be productive, especially during early morning or late evening hours. A local tip: focus on the areas around the confluence of the North and South Umpqua. Also, be aware that river levels can fluctuate rapidly depending on rainfall, so check conditions before you go. The smallmouth here aren't giants, but they're plentiful and aggressive, making for a fun day on the water. Public access is available at various parks and boat ramps along the river.
