Smallmouth Bass

If you're chasing smallmouth in Oregon, don't overlook Rufus. This area provides excellent access to the John Day River, a renowned smallmouth fishery. The rocky structure and fluctuating water levels create ideal habitat. Spring and early summer, before the river heats up too much, are prime times. Focus on areas with current breaks, submerged rocks, and deeper pools. Fall can also be productive as the fish feed up before winter. A local tip: The boat ramp at the Rufus Landing State Recreation Area is a popular access point, but it can get crowded, especially on weekends. Be mindful of the wind; it can pick up quickly and make boat control challenging. The smallmouth here aren't huge, but they're plentiful and scrappy, making for a fun day on the water. Expect to find most fish in the 1-3 pound range, with the occasional larger specimen.
