Smallmouth Bass

Johnsonburg, PA, offers some surprisingly good smallmouth bass fishing, particularly in the Clarion River and its tributaries. What makes this area special is the relatively undeveloped nature of the waterways; you'll find plenty of rocky runs, riffles, and deeper pools that hold good numbers of smallies. The best time to target them is typically from late spring through fall. As the water warms up in late May and June, the smallmouth become more active and aggressive. Focus on areas with current breaks and submerged structure. A local tip: Wading is a popular and effective way to fish the Clarion, but be mindful of water levels, especially after rainfall. Check local gauges before heading out. Also, the smallmouth in this area tend to be opportunistic feeders; they're not particularly picky, but natural-looking presentations often work best. Try crayfish imitations or small crankbaits that mimic local baitfish. Don't overlook the Allegheny River further downstream either, as it provides excellent smallmouth habitat.
