Smallmouth Bass

Smallmouth bass fishing near McKean, Pennsylvania, centers around the many creeks and smaller rivers that feed into Lake Erie. While the lake itself offers smallmouth opportunities, exploring the tributaries can be incredibly rewarding. Elk Creek and Walnut Creek are popular choices, offering rocky bottoms and plenty of cover. Spring and fall are the best times to target smallmouth, as they become more active in the cooler water temperatures. Look for areas with current breaks, such as behind boulders or near fallen trees. A tube bait or crankbait worked along the bottom can be very effective. A practical tip: Wading is a great way to access many of these areas, but be sure to wear appropriate footwear as the rocks can be slippery. Also, be aware of water levels, especially after heavy rain. The smallmouth in this area are known for their aggressive strikes, so be prepared for a fight!
