Smallmouth Bass

The Juniata River near Newton Hamilton, Pennsylvania, is a worthwhile destination for smallmouth bass anglers. This river offers a mix of rocky runs, riffles, and deeper pools that provide ideal habitat for smallmouth. The bronzebacks here aren't giants, but they are plentiful and feisty. Late spring through fall is the prime time to target them, with the warmer months offering the most consistent action. Topwater lures, such as poppers and walking baits, can be deadly in the early morning and late evening. Crayfish-imitating crankbaits and jigs are also effective, especially when fished along rocky bottoms and current breaks. Several access points are available along Route 22, providing opportunities for wading and bank fishing. A canoe or kayak can greatly expand your range. Be mindful of water levels, as the Juniata can fluctuate rapidly after rain. Smallmouth in this section of the river are known for their aggressive strikes, so be prepared for a good fight.
