This river, particularly the stretches downstream from the Youghiogheny River Lake, holds a healthy population of smallmouth. Summer and early fall are ideal times to target these hard-fighting fish. Focus on rocky areas, riffles, and pools, using techniques like casting crankbaits, spinnerbaits, or tubes. Fly fishing with crayfish or minnow imitations can also be very productive. A local tip: Wading is a great way to access many of the best smallmouth spots, but be cautious of slippery rocks and changing water levels.
