Smallmouth Bass

Smallmouth bass fishing near Vader centers on the Cowlitz River. This river system offers good habitat for smallies, particularly in the rocky stretches with moderate current. Summer and early fall are generally the best times to target them, when the water has warmed up and the fish are actively feeding. Look for smallmouth around rocky points, submerged logs, and current breaks. Crayfish imitations, tubes, and crankbaits are all effective lures. A local tip: pay attention to water clarity. If the river is muddy after a rain, the smallmouth will be harder to find. Focus on areas where cleaner water is entering the river, such as near the mouths of tributaries. Access to the Cowlitz is available at several boat ramps and parks along the river. Smallmouth bass in this area typically range from 1-3 pounds, with the occasional larger fish possible.
