Largemouth Bass

Vader, Washington, offers some surprisingly good largemouth bass fishing, particularly in the smaller lakes and sloughs connected to the Cowlitz River floodplain. These areas often hold warmer water and plenty of cover, creating ideal habitat. Spring is prime time, as the bass move into the shallows to spawn. Focus your efforts around emergent vegetation and submerged timber. Early morning and late evening are usually the most productive times. A local tip: check the water levels in the Cowlitz River; if it's high, it can flood into these backwaters, bringing in new forage and dispersing the bass. For access, try the public boat launch at nearby Toledo for access to the Cowlitz, then explore the connected waterways. Remember that many of these areas are weedy, so pack your weedless lures and heavy line. The largemouth here aren't giants, but you can find good numbers of fish in the 1-3 pound range.
