Spanish Mackerel
For fast-paced action, consider targeting Spanish Mackerel around Palmetto. These schooling fish are most abundant during the warmer months, typically from late spring through early fall. Look for them in open waters of Tampa Bay, near the mouth of the Manatee River, or around artificial reefs. Trolling spoons or casting small, shiny lures are effective methods. A great place to launch is the Fort DeSoto Park boat ramp, giving you quick access to open water. A wire leader is essential, as these fish have sharp teeth. Keep an eye out for birds diving, as this often indicates a school of mackerel feeding on baitfish below. Remember that Spanish mackerel are migratory, so their presence can fluctuate.
