These sleek, silver speedsters are prevalent in the nearshore waters during the warmer months, typically from late spring through early fall. Look for them around schools of baitfish, often near inlets, artificial reefs, and along the beaches. Trolling small spoons or casting flashy lures like Got-cha plugs can be highly effective. Keep an eye out for birds diving, which is a telltale sign of mackerel feeding on the surface. The waters off Edisto Beach are easily accessible by boat from several public ramps. A local tip: Use a wire leader to prevent cut-offs from their sharp teeth. Also, Spanish mackerel are known to be sensitive to boat noise, so try to approach your fishing spot slowly and quietly.
