Spanish Mackerel

For some high-speed action, try targeting Spanish Mackerel around Sullivan's Island, South Carolina. These fast-moving predators are a blast to catch and readily take artificial lures. The best time to target them is during the warmer months, typically from late spring through early fall, when they migrate into the area. Look for them near inlets, passes, and along the beaches, often near schools of baitfish. Trolling spoons or casting small, shiny lures like Got-Cha plugs or metal jigs are effective techniques. Use a wire leader to prevent bite-offs, as Spanish Mackerel have sharp teeth. Keep an eye out for birds diving, as this often indicates the presence of feeding mackerel. The area around Breach Inlet can be particularly productive. When the bite is on, these fish can be incredibly aggressive and provide non-stop action. Be mindful of boat traffic and other anglers when trolling.
