Speckled Trout

While Lockport, NY, isn't typically known for saltwater fishing, Speckled Trout (more commonly called Brook Trout in freshwater) can be found in some of the tributaries that feed into Lake Ontario. These are freshwater Speckled Trout, not the saltwater variety. The best time to target them is during the spring and fall when water temperatures are cooler. Look for these fish in the smaller, colder streams and creeks that have good overhead cover and plenty of riffles and pools. The Erie Canal also offers some potential, especially where tributaries enter. Wading is often necessary, so be prepared with appropriate gear. A local tip is to use small spinners or flies that imitate the insects hatching in the area. Be aware of private property and ensure you have permission before accessing any streams. The Brook Trout in these streams are generally wild and can be quite wary, so stealth is key.
