While not a prized sport fish, they can provide consistent action when other species are scarce. Look for them in deeper channels and around structure, particularly during the late fall and winter (November-February) when they migrate into the area. Anglers often find success while targeting other bottom-dwelling species like flounder or sea bass. A practical tip is to use heavier tackle than you might expect, as dogfish are surprisingly strong for their size, and the currents around Hatteras can be challenging. Be aware that while dogfish are edible, they are not highly regarded for their flavor in this area.
