Spotted Bass

While not as common as largemouth, spotted bass can be found in the freshwater portions of the Susquehanna River near Charlestown, Maryland. They often share similar habitats with largemouth, preferring areas with rocky structure, current breaks, and submerged timber. Targeting them specifically requires a slightly different approach. Focus on areas with faster-moving water and rocky bottoms, as spotted bass tend to prefer these conditions. Small crankbaits, jigs, and Carolina-rigged worms can be effective. Spring and fall are generally the best times to target spotted bass, as they become more active in cooler water temperatures. Access to the river is available via several public boat ramps, but be aware of the current and potential for rocky obstructions. These fish aren't as heavily targeted as largemouth, so you may find some surprisingly good fishing if you focus on the right habitat. Local tip: Using a fish finder to locate submerged rock piles and structure can significantly increase your chances of finding spotted bass.
