Spotted Bass

Ellisville and the surrounding areas of southeastern Mississippi offer some good opportunities to target Spotted Bass. While Largemouth Bass get much of the attention, the Leaf River and its tributaries also hold a healthy population of Spots. These fish tend to prefer slightly clearer water and areas with more current than Largemouth, so focus on rocky areas, creek mouths, and deeper pools. Spring and fall are the best times to target them, as they become more active during these periods. Smaller crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and jigs are effective lures. A local tip is to fish the areas where the Leaf River meets smaller creeks; these confluences often hold good numbers of Spotted Bass. The Spotted Bass in this region typically range from 1-3 pounds, providing a fun challenge on light tackle. Remember to check local regulations regarding size and creel limits, as they may differ from those for Largemouth Bass.
