Spotted Bass

For Spotted Bass enthusiasts, Purcell, Oklahoma, offers some under-the-radar opportunities in the South Canadian River. While not as heavily targeted as largemouth, the river holds a healthy population of these aggressive fighters. Spring and fall are generally the best times to target them, as they become more active in moderate temperatures. Look for them around rocky structure, submerged timber, and deeper pools. They tend to prefer areas with more current than largemouth. Smaller crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and Texas-rigged worms are all effective lures. A local's trick: try fishing near the confluences of smaller creeks entering the river, as these areas often hold concentrations of spotted bass. Also, be prepared for some challenging fishing conditions, as the river can be prone to fluctuations in water level and clarity.
