Steelhead

If you're looking to tangle with some Steelhead near Winthrop Harbor, timing is everything. These migratory fish make their way up the tributaries of Lake Michigan, with peak runs typically occurring in the spring and fall. Focus your efforts on the mouths of rivers and streams flowing into the lake, as well as the harbor itself. A popular technique is casting spoons or spinners, or drifting spawn sacs under a float. Knowing where the thermocline sets up is key. The Steelhead will be there. Access to the lakefront is relatively easy via the many public parks and beaches in the area. A practical tip is to pay attention to water clarity – steelhead prefer clear water, so fish the areas where the water is cleanest.
