Striped Bass

Cedar Bluff's Weiss Lake is also a notable destination for targeting Striped Bass, the larger cousins of the hybrid. While not as numerous as hybrids, impressive stripers lurk in these waters. The best time to target them is during the late winter/early spring spawning run as they move up the Coosa River and its tributaries. Look for them near the dam and in the river channel. Live shad is the bait of choice, either fished on downlines or free-lined near the surface. Another productive method is trolling large crankbaits. Local anglers often focus on areas with strong current and structure. A key piece of advice is to monitor the water temperature, as stripers become more active when the water is in the 50-60 degree Fahrenheit range. Be prepared for a challenging fight; these fish can be powerful and elusive. Remember to check current regulations regarding size and creel limits before heading out.
