If you're chasing striped bass in northern Alabama near Fairview, Lewis Smith Lake is your primary target. This deep, clear reservoir offers ideal habitat for stripers, especially in the cooler months. Spring and fall are prime times, as the stripers move shallower to feed. During the summer, they'll retreat to deeper, cooler water, so downrigging or trolling with lead core line is essential. Bank access is limited, but several public boat ramps around the lake provide good access. Houston Recreation Area is a popular spot. Be aware that Smith Lake is known for its clear water, which means stripers can be line-shy, so use fluorocarbon leaders. Also, pay attention to the thermocline, as stripers will often congregate just above it.
