Striped Bass

While Lake Montezuma in Arizona is better known for its cliff dwellings, it also offers a unique, albeit challenging, striper fishing opportunity. This smaller lake requires a different approach than larger impoundments. The key is to focus on areas where the cooler water of the springs mixes with the lake's surface water. This creates thermal refuges that can concentrate stripers, especially during the hotter months. Spring and fall are still the best times, but early morning and late evening can produce bites year-round. Small crankbaits, swimbaits, and topwater lures can be effective, especially when fished near structure. Fly fishing with streamers can also be a fun way to target stripers in this clear water. Access to the lake is limited, but there are a few established fishing areas. Be prepared for tough conditions, as the stripers here can be finicky. The fish here are survivors, so any striper caught in Lake Montezuma is a real trophy.
