Striped Bass

While Whittier isn't the first place that springs to mind for California striper fishing, dedicated anglers can find success in the freshwater stretches of the San Gabriel River. The best time to target striped bass here is during the cooler months, from late fall through early spring, when they move upstream. Look for them around deeper pools, structure like fallen trees, and near the Whittier Narrows Dam. Access can be tricky, with limited formal access points, so be prepared for some hiking. A good starting point is the area near Legg Lake, where the river flows nearby. Keep in mind that river conditions can change rapidly, especially after rainfall, so always check water levels and flow rates before heading out. The striped bass in this area aren't huge, typically in the 2-5 pound range, but the challenge of catching them in an urban river environment makes it rewarding.
