If you're looking to tangle with striped bass in southeast Georgia, Ludowici offers some intriguing freshwater opportunities. The Altamaha River, which isn't too far from Ludowici, is a major draw. While not a classic striper fishery like you'd find further north, the Altamaha does hold a population of these hard-fighting fish, especially during their spring spawning runs. Focus your efforts from late February through April when the stripers migrate upstream. Live bait like shad or eels fished near current breaks and submerged structure is your best bet. Local tip: Check river levels before you go, as heavy rains can make the river unfishable. Public access is available at several boat ramps along the Altamaha, but be prepared for potentially muddy conditions. The stripers here tend to be opportunistic feeders, so don't be afraid to experiment with different lure presentations if live bait isn't producing.
