If you're chasing striped bass in Mississippi, don't overlook Collins. While not as widely known as some of the larger reservoirs, the Okatoma River near Collins offers a unique, smaller-river striper experience. Spring is prime time, as the stripers migrate upstream to spawn, concentrating them in certain areas. Focus your efforts around bridge pilings, submerged timber, and any areas where the river narrows, creating current seams. A key local tip: pay attention to water levels. After heavy rains, the river can become muddy and difficult to fish, but as it clears, the stripers become more active. Bank access is available at several points along Highway 49, but a small boat or kayak will significantly expand your reach.
